Mobile and context-aware services

Instructors: J. Domaszewicz, A. Pruszkowski

The course is an introduction to context-aware services, i.e., services that in order to deliver their functionality acquire and take advantage of information on the current state of the user and his environment (objects, places, and other people). The context information is acquired with assorted sensors. Context-aware services are based on a number of modern ICT technologies, with the mobile technology being the primary one. Context-aware services are in turn the foundation of some key ICT areas, such as pervasive computing. While issues related to context-aware services span multiple layers, the focus of the course is on middleware and the application layer.

The goals of the course are as follows

  • to explain the concept of context and context-aware services,
  • to introduce ICT areas, in which context-aware services are heavily used (i.e., pervasive and ubiquitous computing, Ambient Intelligence, Internet of Things, Cooperating Objects, Wireless Sensor/Actuator Networks),
  • to explain the benefits middleware layers in the development of context-aware and mobile services,
  • to present the functionality and architecture of a number of both research-oriented and industrial platforms for context-aware services, in different application domains, including platforms that rely on mobile devices,
  • to stimulate an innovation-oriented approach to context-aware and mobile services.
